This marks the 300th post on the San Francisco Plastic Surgery Blog. The first entries were posted in June of 2009, and included Mommy Makeovers with videos about Breast Augmentation and Tummy Tucks. Some things never go out of style, but they rarely stay the same.
Some Things Change – Breast Implants
Breast Augmentation has changed. Five years ago, I was using silicone gel and saline breast implants fairly equally. Now that we have “Gummy Bear Breast Implants,” I use silicone gel breast implants about 70% of the time. With the advent of highly cohesive silicone gel breast implants, today’s silicone gel is less likely to migrate, and allows for the creation of shaped breast implants. Both are finally FDA approved for cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery.
Some Things Stay the Same – Tummy Tuck or Liposuction
Five years ago, the decision between Tummy Tuck and Liposuction was essentially the same as it is today. Disproportionate fat, with tight skin, responds well to Liposuction alone. If loose skin and muscle laxity are present, a Tummy Tuck is needed. Despite what you may read elsewhere, there is no safe, effective and reliable way to shrink skin without removing it surgically. Today, an incision is still necessary to get a flat belly when there is too much skin, or the muscle has been stretched out. On the other hand, we can make the scar less noticeable now. Scar Treatment has improved since the San Francisco Plastic Surgery Blog was started, less than five years ago.
Better Scars Make Better Results
A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to research a novel means of scar reduction. As a primary researcher, I saw first-hand how Neodyne’s Embrace Scar Therapy worked. Last year, Embrace became available, and this year Neodyne received its sixth patent for its novel approach to improved scar healing.
