Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery is a discipline of Plastic Surgery that is dedicated to body shaping after massive weight loss.

Loose Pants Thin Belly

If you look like the model above after your weight loss, congratulations. On the other hand, if reality has left you with a roll of belly skin as loose as your old jeans, post bariatric plastic surgery might help.

You may be familiar with the term Bariatric Surgery. Baros is borrowed from Greek and means weight. A barometer, for example, measures air pressure or more literally, the weight of the air. Bariatric Surgery means weight loss surgery, or surgery designed to cause weight loss.

Bariatric Surgery is any surgical procedure designed primarily to cause weight loss. Examples include: gastric bypass, duodenal switch, roux-en-y, gastric stapling and a number of other procedures designed to induce weight loss. They work by restricting the size of the stomach, to induce a sensation of fullness and causing malabsorption, or the inability to absorb all the calories ingested.

Post Bariatric Surgery

Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery - Arm Lift Brachioplasty

For areas that need help after weight loss, the breasts and belly may be the first places that come to mind, but the arms can also take a hit. An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can tighten loose arm skin.

Post Bariatric Surgery is performed after weight loss goals are achieved. Bariatric surgery patients frequently seek a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to complete their body transformation.

Post Bariatric Surgery includes the usual plastic surgery procedures used to tighten and enhance body contours, such as tummy tucks, arm lifts and thigh lifts, but in some cases they are supercharged to take care of situations where the skin laxity is extreme.

Body Lifts

Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery - Body Lift

Body Lifts come in all shapes and sizes. The larger the skin excess, the larger the lift required.

Perhaps the ultimate post bariatric plastic surgery is the Lower-Body Lift. I had the privilege to operate with the plastic surgeon most responsible for creating the lower-body lift, Kansas plastic surgeon, Ted E. Lockwood, MD. He was in San Francisco at a live surgery aesthetic conference and performed the procedure he developed. As plastic surgery residents, we were “volunteered” as surgical assistants, but it also gave us the best learning experience available at the conference. Dr. Lockwood was as humble as he was innovative. His work in the area of excisional body-contouring surgery is still the gold standard today for post bariatric plastic surgery. Sadly, he passed away just a few days short of his 60th birthday, after a year-long struggle with brain cancer.

However, if you are unhappy with excessive loose skin left behind, plastic surgery may finally allow you to achieve the end point you have worked so hard for. As a member of the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ASBPS) and the International Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ISBPS), I have helped many patients who have successfully lost weight to feel better about their bodies and themselves.
