Since 1997 there has been a 250% increase in the total number of plastic surgery procedures. The largest percentage of these increases in is nonsurgical procedures like Botox and Fillers (up by 461%); however, Cosmetic Plastic Surgery procedures have also increased by 80%.
The Most Popular Plastic Surgery
The most popular procedure remains Breast Augmentation. Three to four hundred-thousand women get Breast Implants every year in the United States alone. Last year, over 1.5 million Breast Augmentations were performed world wide. Over the last six years, there have been some changes in the procedure, and bigger changes occurred in the Breast Implants themselves.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS):
- In 2006, 383,886 breast augmentation procedures were performed and of those 81% used saline implants and 19% used silicone. In 2012, 330,631 breast augmentation procedures were performed and of those only 28% used saline implants and 72% used silicone.
A Shift From Saline to Silicone Breast Implants
The biggest change in Breast Enhancement has been the shift from Saline Breast Implants to Silicone Gel Filled Breast Implants. Silicone filled Breast Implants provide better feeling results, but the pros and cons of the Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants should be discussed with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon on an individual basis.
Gummy Bear Breast Implants
The Newest Breast Implants are soft and tough. Over the years, Silicone Breast Implants have changed. The silicone shells are higher quality, stronger and less permeable, providing a more reliable Breast Implant. Moreover, the silicone filler is more like a solid than a liquid, but remains soft and bouncy.
How to Pick the Best Breast Implant Size
Selecting the optimal Breast Implant size is more Art than Science. The best advice I can give any woman considering Breast Enhancement Surgery is to do your homework. There are many ways to select a size, but nothing is more consistent than trying it out at home, at your leisure and in your clothes. Many articles have been written about How to Select the best Breast Implant Size. Looking at before and after pictures can narrow the choices, but once you feel you have the right range, why not try it out? Buy a bra the size you want to be and fill it. Silicone sizers are available online, but a ziplock bag filled with rice works well, and allows you to easily change sizes. Filling the feet of a pair of pantyhose can also work. While harder to change volume, they do give a better shape.
Choose a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
If the size choice is still unclear, or you are ready to take the next step, be certain to find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to guide you through the process.
