This week we have the 2022 Procedural Statistics Release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Both preeminent world class plastic surgery societies are reporting an increase in post pandemic cosmetic surgery. Here are the latest numbers according the ASPS.
Who Is The ASPS?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is a 92-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the care of plastic surgery patients through education, research and advocacy. It is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world – with more than 8,000 members, and more than 92 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. The Aesthetic Society is a subset of ASPS members dedicated to the cosmetic aspects of plastic surgery.
The Post-Pandemic Upswing
Over the last three years, cosmetic surgery procedures have increased by 19%. Body Shaping procedures increased 25%, while Facial Plastic Surgery rose 18% and Breast Enhancement is trending up by 15%. In terms of numbers of procedures, Breast Enhancement leads the way with 575,492, followed by Body Shaping at 576.485 and Facial Plastic Surgery with 346,384 procedures performed in 2022. Let’s look at each category and break them down by procedure.
Body Shaping Procedures Up 25%
Body Shaping Procedures like Liposuction, Abdominoplasty, BBL (fat grafting to the buttocks) and Brachioplasty (Arm Lifts), excluding Breast Procedures which are listed separately below, rose by 25%.
Facial Plastic Surgery Up 18%
Facial Plastic Surgery including Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), Facelift, Neck lift and Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) increased by 18%.
Breast Enhancement Up 15%
Breast Enhancement Surgery increased by 15%. This includes various breast surgeries such as Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction and Gynecomastia reduction (male breast reduction).
Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures Up 70%
Minimally Invasive Procedures like Botox, fillers and skin resurfacing were up 70%. The number of treatments increased to 8,736,591 from
5,043,057 before the pandemic.
