Fat Grafting has long been used for Facial Augmentation, but over the last two decades fat transplantation for Breast Augmentation and Buttocks Augmentation has taken off.
The concept is simple. Remove fat from the donor site, ideally an area that has too much fat, and transplant it to an area that is deficient. There are various methods of harvesting, preparing and delivering the fat, but the details are beyond the scope of this post. In general, the less damage done to the cells, the better the Fat Grafts take.
Facial Fat Grafting
One of the oldest areas for fat grafting is the face. A large component of facial aging is due to fat atrophy and descent. Replacing lost fat is an important part of restoring a healthy, youthful appearance. The most common areas for Facial Fat Grafting are:
- Cheeks
- Nasolabial Folds
- Lips
- Temples
- Periocular Regions
Breast Fat Grafting
My favorite use of Fat Grafting to the Breasts is to correct contour deformities. The dents caused by biopsies and cancer treatment can be smoothed with the insertion of fat.
Fat Grafting has recently had a resurgence of use for primary Breast Augmentation. It is appropriate for smaller augmentations, and can be used in conjunction with a breast implant to improve soft tissue coverage. There is a limit to the amount of fat that can be injected, and complications come with this new procedure. The use should be tailored to specific needs and the risk should be thoroughly reviewed prior to surgery.
Buttocks Fat Grafting
The fastest growing procedure over the last decade, figuratively and literally, is the Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL. The ability to use autologous fat to augment the size and shape of the buttocks is perhaps one of the most versatile procedures Board Certified Plastic Surgeons have for improving buttock aesthetics.
