The Brazilian Buttocks Lift (BBL) continues to be the fastest growing cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, no pun intended. During the BBL, fat that would normally be disposed of after Liposuction, is used to enhance the contours of the buttocks.
BBL Myths
While the BBL has become more popular, there are also some common misconceptions about the procedure. It is a safe and effective surgery for adding volume to the buttocks. It provides plastic surgeons with a powerful tool to correct buttocks atrophy, but it is not magical and there are limits to what a BBL can accomplish.
Brazilian Butt Lifts can…
- add volume to the buttocks
- selectively add volume to concavities
- avoid enhancing areas that are already large enough
- give long lasting results
Brazilian Butt Lifts cannot…
- completely change the shape of the buttocks
- remove excess skin
- guarantee a set volume of enhancement
- remove cellulite
How Much Fat Takes?
Buttock Fat Grafts are placed into the space between the buttocks skin and the underlying gluteal muscles. Placing fat deeper than this increases the risk and complications of the procedure.
The amount of fat that survives depends on the quality of the fat cells transplanted and the quality of the blood supply available to support the fat cells in their new home. The quality of the fat cells depends on how much fat is available for grafting and it usually decreases in areas that have already been harvested. The blood supply of the buttocks is usually good. It can be decreased by injury, scarring, disease and by over packing the graft site.
The average fat take is estimated at 50% in most published clinical papers; however, the range is large (0 to 100%). The best techniques used to increase the quality of fat take, and the quality of the fat grafts, include minimally manipulating the fat and not over packing the area being grafted. The goal is to enhance the initial take of the graft and increase the longevity of your results.
Once the Fat Takes, Is it Permanent?
The fat that establishes a blood supply will last for years. It remembers where it came from. Since the fat is usually taken from areas that are disproportionate, it tends to be fat that is harder to lose. On the other hand, fluctuations in weight, either gaining or losing weight, will affect the results. Weight gain increases the size of the buttocks, and weight loss causes the buttocks grafts to atrophy.
