Breast Reduction for Women is not only about making the breasts smaller or more proportionate; it is also about comfort. While Breast Reduction does reduce the appearance of oversized breasts and makes them fit better in clothing, for many women, breast reduction alleviates the physical manifestations of large breasts – neck, back and breast pain.
Why Women Get Breast Reductions
Before surgery, my Breast Reduction Patients complain about more than the size of their breasts. They have neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain as well as breast pain. Often, recurrent irritation and infections beneath the breasts contribute to the discomfort associated with large breasts. Reduction Mammoplasty doesn’t just reduce the size of the breasts, it helps women feel better about their breasts emotionally and physically.
Smaller Breasts and Increased Physical Activity
Most of my Breast Reduction patients lose weight after their Reduction Mammoplasty. Maybe it’s motivation to protect their investment. Maybe it’s hormonal. Or perhaps, it’s the fact that two large, uncomfortable breasts, which used to make physical activity painful if not impossible, have been reduced to a size now manageable with a comfortable bra that no longer digs into their shoulders.
Before Breast Reduction, the weight and motion of the breasts inhibit physical activity. After Breast Reduction, physical activity is much easier and enjoyable. The breasts are not just smaller and lighter, but they are also firmer and tighter.
Breast Reduction and Breast Asymmetry
It has often been said, breasts are like sisters not twins. Asymmetry is completely normal; however, with larger breasts asymmetry might be magnified. Before Reduction Mammoplasty surgery, the breasts are carefully marked so that symmetry is improved postoperatively. The larger breast is reduced and lifted more than the smaller side to compensate for the differences.
I have patients whose breasts were more than a cup size different from side to side. After surgery, the ability to buy a bra off-the-shelf that fits both breasts comfortably is an added bonus of their breast reduction surgery.
Breast Reduction by Breast Implant Removal
As we age, often our breasts get larger. This is true for women who may not have had a lot of breast tissue in their youth. With the availability of Breast Implants, smaller breasts can be enlarged to improve body proportions. A couple times a year, however, I will see a patient who had breast implants placed in their youth, and who now feel they are too big. These patients have usually been very happy with their implants for years if not decades, but as their breasts naturally enlarge with age or weight gain, the breasts become too big and disproportionate for their frame.
Instead of reducing their breast tissue with a Breast Reduction, Breast Implant Removal is often a simpler and easier procedure. When the breasts are saggy, a Breast Lift can be performed at the same time, just like during a Breast Reduction. In the case above, no lift was performed.
